Google Sheets was not built for large data
Google Sheets enforces a hard limit of 10 million cells per spreadsheet. With 50 columns, that gives you roughly 200,000 rows. Even well before that limit, performance degrades — scrolling becomes sluggish past 50,000 rows, and formulas slow to a crawl. If your dataset has 500K or 1M rows, Google Sheets simply will not open it.
Viztab uses a high-performance engine optimized specifically for large datasets. It streams and indexes data locally, so you can scroll through 10 million rows as smoothly as 100. There is no cell limit and no row limit imposed by the software.
Your data stays on your device
When you open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets, your data is uploaded to Google's servers, processed there, and stored in Google Drive. For many businesses and individuals, this raises serious privacy and compliance concerns — especially with sensitive financial data, patient records, or proprietary information.
Viztab processes everything locally in your browser. Your files are never uploaded anywhere. This makes it suitable for working with confidential data without worrying about third-party data access, GDPR compliance, or terms-of-service data usage clauses.
No internet? No problem.
Google Sheets requires an active internet connection for full functionality. While it offers a limited offline mode through Chrome, it requires pre-configuration and does not support opening new files offline. If your connection drops mid-session, you can lose unsaved work.
Viztab works entirely offline from the start. Open it in any browser, drag in your file, and work without any internet dependency. The desktop app works the same way — no cloud sync, no login, no connectivity requirements.
When Google Sheets is the better choice
Google Sheets excels at real-time collaboration. If you need multiple people editing the same spreadsheet simultaneously, Google Sheets is the right tool. It also integrates deeply with the Google Workspace ecosystem — Gmail, Google Forms, Google Data Studio, and Apps Script.
But if you are working with large files solo or need to analyze big datasets quickly and privately, Viztab is purpose-built for that job.
Frequently asked questions
Not directly from Google Drive. However, you can export any Google Sheets file as CSV or XLSX (File > Download) and open it in Viztab. For files that are too large for Google Sheets, you likely already have the data as a CSV or database export.
Google Sheets has a limit of 10 million cells per spreadsheet. The number of rows depends on your column count: with 26 columns (A-Z), you can fit around 400,000 rows. With 50 columns, the effective limit drops to about 200,000 rows. Performance typically degrades well before these limits.
Viztab is free for spreadsheets up to 1,000 rows with no account required. Viztab Pro unlocks unlimited rows for users who work with large datasets regularly. Google Sheets is free with a Google account but requires you to store data on Google's servers.
Yes. Viztab supports 370+ spreadsheet formulas including SUM, VLOOKUP, IF, INDEX/MATCH, COUNTIF, and most other standard functions. The syntax is compatible with what you already know from Google Sheets or Excel.
